Catering Support

Certificate in Catering Support
Leading to a full award at QQI Level 4 Catering Support

This course is for those who wish :

  • To work in the catering industry in any capacity e.g.  bar work, waitressing, deli counter, kitchen, hotels, restaurants,  hospitals and nursing home kitchens.
  • To gain  a nationally recognised qualification if already working in the catering field.

·         To progress to further studies at Level  5, 6, 7 and 8.


Entry Requirements:

Applicant should be:

  • A confident reader, writer and speller.
  • Have completed Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications.
  • Recognition of prior learning or work experience in the field may be taken into account should you not have a QQI Level 3 or Junior Certificate.


Additional Requirements:

  • Be prepared to commit to attending classes three days per week
  • Basic computer skills eg word processing, internet and email are required.
  • Be able to work effectively in a group situation and independently.
  • Attend all timetabled classes for the duration of the programme.
  • Participate in all planned programme activities.
  • Study at home reqularly and appropriately for the duration of the programme.
  • The learner must be able to participate in two weeks work experience to participate fully on this programme.  This work experience is outside of class time.
  • Garda vetting may be required depending on work experience.

Eligibility Criteria: 


The course is free to participants who:


·         Are in receipt of any DSP payment or medical card,

·         Do not have a Leaving Certificate or equivalent,

·         Are on a very low income.

Programme Content:


90 credits required for Major QQI Level 4 Award.   


Intergrated Programme:


  • This is an integrated programme which covers eight components revolving totally around the catering industry.
  • This is a very ‘hands on’ programme which involves site visits to relevant working kitchens and guest speakers throughout the course.
  • Communications, Team Working,  Customer Service, Short Order Cooking, Work Experience, Meal Service, Practical Cooking Skills are some of the modules covered.


Learner Supports:

The following supports are available to learners who participate on this course:

  • Study Skills Revision Class will be provided and is recommended for all participants.
  • Access to KWETB Adult Guidance Service.
  • Support for students through the Adult Basic Education Service if required.
  • Wheelchair accessibility.
  • Childcare may be available under CET Scheme.  See Co-ordinator for more details.


Application Procedure:

Places are allocated based on successfully meeting the eligibility criteria, learner need, learner suitability for the programme and places available.

Prospective students will:

  • Fill in an Application Form.
  • Attend for interview.


Progression Options:


Learners who successfully complete this course will have the option of working in various catering fields in various jobs.  Further study including Level 5, 6, 7 or 8 in various areas is an option.  Adult Education Guidance Service is available to all students.
